Hayes E&C Ltd was appointed as the sole structural fabrication and erection team for the new Aldi in Neath Abbey Road, Neath.

A distinguishing feature of the Aldi store plan is the 1,899 square metre footprint of which 1,315 square meters is retail space, utilising seven 24 metre trusses from side to side to produce a clear and open shop floor.

This store formed part of a framework agreement secured through a collaborative partnership with Owen Associates and Aldi Stores to facilitate Aldi’s expansion plans throughout the UK.

Delivery

Hayes E&C Ltd were required to draft, fabricate, paint and erect 66.8 tonnes of structural steel to plan, sequence and cost. This included all steel portal frame structural steelwork, along with all secondary steelwork to facilitate the fixing of the new cladding.

Hayes E&C Ltd had one erection team on site for 2 weeks, finishing the project in June 2021.

Outcome

Using StruCad software, Hayes Engineering was able to model and deliver the entire project to BIM level 2.

The IFC Models created by Hayes Engineering were used to create accurate 2D General

Arrangement drawings for comment by Owen Associates, Structural Engineers, Architects and clash detection by other sub-contractors such as Cladders.

Once approved, Hayes Engineering were able to fabricate and erect to completion within a seven week window. The project was manufactured to execution level 2.

Hayes Engineering has delivered over 40 Aldi Stores structures through this framework to date, as a result of effective partnership with the client, timely delivery and a demonstratable record of high-quality fabrication and erection.

Hayes E&C Ltd have been appointed as the sole structural fabrication and erection team for Hafod-Morfa Copperworks located in Plasmarl, Swansea.

To date we have fabricated and erected the steel framework for the new-build clocktower that will replace the original while preserving the powerhouse/distilleries aesthetics for generations to come.

We have installed the majority of the steel for the new-build Penderyn visitors centre the new-build link building and are yet to install the steel for the new-build bin store.

Swansea City Council had secured a £3.75m National Lottery Heritage Fund grant for the expansive Hafod-Morfa site’s transformation work, with additional works to other historical buildings in the vicinity funded by Welsh Government Transforming Towns funding.

The Welsh Whisky Co Ltd new-build visitors centre will consist of a Shop, tasting bar, exhibition space & toilets while the new-build covered walkway will connect the refurbished powerhouse/distillery, new-build visitor’s centre & barrel store.

Although this is an ongoing project the distillery and visitors centre is expecting to open its doors and welcome visitors to enjoy the Penderyn Experience whisky tour in 2022

WAST Pentwyn, Cardiff

Hayes Engineering was appointed as the sole structural steel fabrication and erection team for the new re-roof structure and conversion of two existing 2.5-storey steel framed buildings. Blocks A & B were adapted to provide a new ambulance station for the Welsh Ambulance Service / Shared Services NHS (WAST) Pentwyn, Cardiff.

A distinguishing feature of the W.A.S.T. building is the 2,253 square meter footprint and the mezzanine floor within Block B, which overlooks the entire ambulance / vehicle bay.

This project was delivered under the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

Delivery

Hayes Engineering were required to draft, fabricate, paint and erect over 44 tonnes of structural steel to plan, sequence and cost.  This included all alterations to the existing portal frames’ structural steelwork, along with secondary steelwork to facilitate fixing of the new cladding.

Hayes Engineering deployed one erection team on site for this scheme from September – October 2020. During this time, we removed over 4.5 tonnes of existing steel to allow us to install the new structural steels for both Block A and B, along with the installation of the mezzanine floor and stairs for Block B.

Outcome

Hayes Engineering were able to fabricate and erect to completion within a seven-week window. The project was manufactured to Execution Level 2.

Trago Mills, Merthyr Tydfil

Hayes Engineering was appointed as the sole structural fabrication and erection team for the 200,000 sqft, Trago Mills store, based on the outskirts of Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.

The project, with its unique castle-like architecture, was a complex structure comprising of a warehouse, retail unit, two storey office building, shops, railway, security office, main entrance, café building, external walkways, workshop and offices.

Delivery

Hayes Engineering was required to draft, fabricate, paint / galvanize and erect over 3000 tonnes of structural steel to plan, sequence and cost.

Stretching 1⁄2 mile long end-to-end, the structure provides 215,000m2 of retail space. The main retail unit and warehouse superstructure, comprised a single storey steel portal frame installed on a pad foundation with perimeter strip footing. The structure installed by Hayes Engineering provided full support for the lightweight roofing and cladding finish applied. Hayes Engineering had two erection teams on site for nearly 18 months, starting with the painted main portal building and finally finishing erection with the galvanized mansard walkways in March 2017.

Outcome

The project achieved BIM level 2 using our Tekla BIM software. Models created with Tekla BIM software contain accurate, reliable and detailed information needed for successful

Building Information Modelling and construction execution.

Tekla structures has improved the way we work in our own offices and with our Clients by creating more accurate ways of working and streamlining collaboration between all parties, at all stages of the construction project Models were shared with all parties on the project team using 4Projects (online platform), for clash detection and comment. Through this collaborative approach the project was delivered to budget and programme, with coordination checks carried out at the earliest opportunity to mitigate time and cost inflation.

Hayes Engineering was appointed as the sole structural fabrication and erection team for the £16M landmark ice rink, which houses two ice pads. The scheme was described by developers Greenbank as a ‘world class facility capable of holding Olympic and European standard events’; it is also used for public skating and schools.

Delivery

Working closely with the Client, Hayes Engineering drafted, fabricated, painted and erected over 850 tonnes of structural steel to plan, sequence and cost.

The completed structure houses:

  • An Olympic size main ice pad of 65 metres by 30 metres, 4 metres longer and 4 metres wider than the previous facility.
  • A second slightly smaller pad of 54m by 24m, where junior hockey matches could be played.
  • 4 curling lanes; the first ever in Cardiff.
  • A gymnasium, featuring around 30 work stations and a dance studio.
  • Facilities to stage major boxing or other sports events if required.

Outcome

Using Tekla Structures software, Hayes Engineering was able to model the entire project to BIM level 2. The IFC models created by Hayes Engineering were uploaded onto 4Projects (online platform), along with 2D General Arrangement drawings for comment by Kier, Structural Engineers, Architects and clash detection with all stakeholders.

During construction the steel fabrication model was provided for approval in 3D format, which greatly assisted the approval process. Once approved, we were able to produce 2D fabrication drawings direct from the model, ensuring accurate and high-quality fabrications.
